I have been playing Digimon World 1 for a long time. Like, embarrassingly long. And the one thing that has always bugged me about the tier lists floating around online is that most of them are either made by people who have not put in enough hours, or they rank things based on vibes and nostalgia alone.
So I went and did it properly. Every single ultimate tested with fully maxed stats, same conditions across the board, ranked on four things: moveset, hitbox, recovery speed, and how painful it actually is to obtain them. If you need to get the game running first, check out my PS1 emulation guide. This is my list. You are probably going to disagree with at least a few of these, and that is completely fine.
Megadramon
The king. The best Digimon in this game, full stop. Ice Statue and Full Potential on the same Digimon is something that should not be allowed and yet here we are.
Moderate
Item: Mega Hand — Grade S Cup (Arena)
Megadramon is the king of Digimon World. There is no Digimon better than him, and that's because of his access to Ice Statue and Full Potential. No other Digimon can use both of these moves, meaning Megadramon can buff himself up, become incredibly fast, and then spam Ice Statue against his opponents. His ultimate hits like a nuclear weapon, his hitbox geometry lets him dodge moves in ways that feel almost unfair, and he's not very hard to obtain. Nothing in this game can stop Megadramon.
Piximon
The smallest hitbox in the game combined with Bug and Poison Claw. You will spend more time trying to hit this guy than you will actually fighting him.
Easy to Moderate
Item: Small Spear — Win Curling vs MetalMamemon
Piximon has the smallest hitbox in the game and it's oh so hard to land shots on him. He can use the move Bug to flatten his opponents and he can spam Poison Claw, making him very annoying to deal with. He can't use Ice Statue, but with these two moves he can be used competitively and can easily clear the entire game with no problems. His ultimate isn't too bad either.
H-Kabuterimon
A pure monster. The internet is divided on this one. I am not.
Hardest in the game
Item: Horn Helmet — Beetle Tournament (Beetle Land Arena)
This guy feels like a Mega Digimon, and if you look into more modern Digimon games, he actually is. He feels incredible! Massive stats, elite moveset, and the ability to hold his own in the arena easily. His hitbox is enormous and he feels clunky, but he is the hardest Digimon to obtain in the entire game. If you see him pop as an evolution option, you have already beat the game. Pure, raw, and totally relentless.
SkullGreymon
A glass cannon with Ice Statue and Muscle Charge. Looks incredible. Hits incredibly hard. More ways to get him than most people realise.
Hard — multiple paths
From: Greymon, Devimon, Bakemon, Garurumon, Mojyamon
Death trigger: MetalGreymon or Megadramon — 10%
Item: Fatal Bone
SkullGreymon looks amazing and hits like a truck. Ice Statue alone puts him in an elite category, but the issues are real. He has decently slow recovery when knocked down, a massive hitbox that makes him an easy target, and just like H-Kabuterimon he feels clunky. Most people don't realise that you can get him naturally through training from Greymon, Devimon, Bakemon, Garurumon, or Mojyamon without needing a death trigger at all. The death trigger off MetalGreymon or Megadramon at 10% is also there if you want to gamble, and there is even a Fatal Bone item that digivolves directly to him. More paths in than most ultimates.
MegaSeadramon
A status locking machine. Confuse them, freeze them, hit them with Ice Statue before they can breathe. Your opponent will barely move.
Hard — easier via Coelamon
Item: Coral Charm — Dragon Eye Lake (Fish)
MegaSeadramon is amazing. Aqua Magic, Ice Statue, and Confused Storm give him so many ways to completely lock down an opponent. He doesn't have the raw power of some other ultimates, but his hitbox geometry actually helps him to dodge attacks. He's hard to acquire through normal paths but significantly more manageable if you come through Coelamon. He's one of my personal favorites.
Vademon
Stop hating on Vademon. Bug and Full Potential. Easy to get. Capable in combat. The stigma around him is completely undeserved.
Very Easy
with no other evolution met
50% chance trigger
Item: Ray Gun — Back Dimension
If your Digimon hits eleven days of age without meeting any other evolution criteria, Vademon shows up. People clown on him because he looks weird and sounds annoying, but he has Bug and Full Potential, a small hitbox, and is one of the easiest ultimates in the game to acquire. Play your game on mute when you have him, otherwise you'll go insane.
Monzaemon
The most accessible ultimate in the game. Twenty years later and this teddy bear is still one of my personal favorites.
Easiest ultimate
Special: Numemon + Monzaemon suit in Toy Town
Item: X Bandage — Toy Town (Trade cards with ToyAgumon)
We all had Numemon as children, he's part of being initiated into the game. But when you have one, take him to Toy Town, jump in the suit, and you are done. He's incredibly easy to get, and could very well be your first ultimate Digimon. He gets up fast when he's hit, his hitbox isn't too bad, and he has Megalo Spark making him a true threat. The lack of Full Potential holds him back a bit from S tier though, but there is nothing wrong with good old Monzaemon.
Phoenixmon
Hard to get through normal training but there is a sneaky shortcut most people do not know about.
Hard — or 10% death trigger
Special: Kokatorimon — 10% chance on death
Item: Red Ruby — Version 0 Cup (Arena)
High stats, strict care requirements, near maxed discipline, and you can miss this one very easily. The shortcut: Kokatorimon has a 10% chance to evolve into Phoenixmon on death, the same mechanic as SkullGreymon off MetalGreymon. When you land on him he is fantastic! He has a massive hitbox but the moveset more than compensates for it entirely. He can even enter the Ice Sanctuary with you to recruit Angemon, which is a nice bonus. Phoenixmon feels like a Mega Digimon, and has premium animations and a unique feel. He's truly awesome.
Andromon
The most reliable ultimate to land on. Balanced requirements, tons of evolution paths, solid holy trinity of techs.
Easy to Moderate
Item: Cyber Part — Metric Cup (Arena)
Megalo Spark, Thunder Justice, and All Range Beam is a very solid trinity of techs. He's one of the most reliable ultimates to land on because the stat requirements are balanced and low, and he has a ton of evolution paths. The thing holding him back is that Megalo Spark isn't Ice Statue or Bug, so he sits just below the top tier. But there isn't anything wrong with picking up an Andromon!
Etemon
Absolutely hilarious. A monkey throwing poop that somehow slaps in combat. Smaller hitbox, solid moveset, surprisingly capable.
Moderate — very few mistakes
Item: Golden Banana — Etemon sells on Digimon Bridge
I adore running around with this monkey dude following me. He has hilarious chimp sound effects and a filth move that covers the screen in poop and causes status conditions. His hitbox is tight so he dodges attacks well, and his move pool is ok. He's hard to acquire because of the need for very few care mistakes, but he's perfectly capable of carrying you through the entire game. He's one of the most fun ultimates to have!
Digitamamon
One of the hardest Digimon to face in the game. The partner version is sadly just average, mostly because of that recovery time.
Very Hard — 0-10g weight
Item: Mysty Egg — Whamon's Secret Beach Cave
Digitamamon has terrible recovery times and it's so painful to watch. He takes forever to get up off the ground, and because of it, takes a lot of damage. His ultimate is my favorite in the game though. A giant ghost chases your enemies around the battlefield but it can also damage you, so it's a double edged sword. It does hit hard! He has Megalo Spark and access to Confused Storm and he's not actually as bad as some people make him out to be. His animations are premium and he feels so unique compared to every other ultimate in the entire game. But against faster Digimon who use attacks like Poison Claw and Ice Statue, he's pretty useless.
Giromon
Great kit. Megalo Spark, All Range Beam, Full Potential. Small with fast recovery. And then there is that ultimate.
Easy to Moderate
Special: Guardromon in Factorial Town as Mamemon — 1/11 chance
Item: Chain Saw — Win Curling vs MetalMamemon
I go back and forth on this one every time. Great kit, easy to get, small with fast recovery, and he can carry you through the entire game. Most tier lists put him much higher and I understand why, but his ultimate misses constantly. It will even miss stationary targets and I cannot turn a blind eye to that. Fun to use, solid kit, but that ultimate is a crime.
MetalGreymon
The poster mon of the entire franchise. In this game he is, unfortunately, kind of a dud.
Moderate
Item: Metal Part — Grade S Cup (Arena)
MetalGreymon is so iconic to Digimon, and growing up he is the one Digimon everyone wanted! But in this game he is kind of a dud, and is limited mostly to mech moves that are slow to pull off and lack critical status effects. So many champion Digimon genuinely surpass him as an ultimate. He looks awesome, his ultimate hits hard, and you will know you trained well when he shows up. But there are so many better options. My honest advice: get him, let him die in battle, and pray you roll SkullGreymon instead.
Mamemon
I want to like this little guy. I really do. He looks a bit dumb and his moveset is absolutely abysmal.
Easy to Moderate
Item: Silver Ball — Win Curling vs MetalMamemon
Mamemon only gets access to mech and battle type moves. Mech moves are slow, clunky, and lack the critical status effects that make Ice Statue or Bug so broken. He can use Full Potential but then what? Pulse Laser? Come on. Pick Coelamon. Pick almost anything over this.
MetalMamemon
Same story, different outfit. At least Mamemon can use Full Potential. MetalMamemon cannot even do that.
Moderate
Special: Talk to Guardromon in Factorial Town as Mamemon — 5/11 chance
Item: Metal Armor — Win Curling vs MetalMamemon
Poor moveset, average ultimate, middle of the pack to acquire, and there is never a point in this game where he goes above and beyond. All mech and fighting techs with no follow-up potential whatsoever. His ultimate does look genuinely cool and hits hard, which is the one saving grace. Otherwise just skip.
Final Thoughts
That is every ultimate in Digimon World 1 ranked. Megadramon at the top, Mamemon and MetalMamemon at the bottom where they belong. The placements that are going to cause the most debate are Giromon in B and Vademon in A, and I stand by both completely.
