[Memory Card] The Old City Dogs of Megaman Legends

Old City Dogs — WornOutWill

The Old City dogs in Mega Man Legends are one of the earliest hostile encounters players face on Kattelox Island, but not in the way you think. They were fast, relentless, and oddly aggressive, patrolling the Old City and attacking players on sight. You could not eliminate them in a typical fashion. You just had to give them a swift kick and send them on their way. Legends was released by Capcom in 1997 for the PlayStation 1, and it was a complete departure from the classic series. For many kids who grew up with it, these dogs were not just minor enemies. They were unforgettable pests you loved and hated. But for me, it became tied into something much more personal.

The cats populate quick in Legends..

I have many fond memories of Mega Man Legends growing up, but the one that sticks out the most is the damn dogs in the Old City.

When I was younger, I had many traumatic experiences with my cat, Bonkers (RIP buddy, miss you), chasing my feet through the kitchen in the middle of the night. He had a whole ritual about it. He would rear up, shake his back, wiggle in this deranged little way, and then spring. I can still feel his paws gripping onto my legs, that particular dread of his claws, and the tiny scratches he would leave after completely violating my personal space and peace of mind.

He thought it was a great time. I did not.

The Old City and Its Dogs

There are so many dogs here.

So, when I played Mega Man Legends around that same period and it came time to cross through the Old City ruins, I would feel the full-body memory of Bonkers come flooding back. The paws, the dread, all of it.

There was something genuinely psychologically gripping about watching those dogs rear up, bark, and charge directly at me. Their stiff animation, the sudden forward lunge, the way they committed fully once they locked on. I had zero real-world experience with dogs at that point, and this was my first impression of what dogs actually were.

I am completely serious when I say that after encountering them at age six, I was convinced every dog on Earth was one bad moment away from rearing up and going full send. Whenever I walked past a dog around that time, I was already mentally lacing up my shoes, because I knew it was about to be "woof, woof, woof" time.

What Are the Old City Dogs in Mega Man Legends?

In gameplay terms, the Old City dogs function as early hostile enemies patrolling the ruined districts of Kattelox Island. They are fast, aggressive, and attack in packs, often knocking players into stun loops if they are not careful.

Unlike Reaverbots, which feel mechanical and distant, these dogs feel personal. They bark, they charge, and they chase you across open streets like you borrowed money from their boss and he wants it back. For a kid still learning movement, camera control, and combat pacing on the PS1, they hit a very specific kind of panic button.

Why Are There So Many Dogs?

These dogs don't look normal.

These dogs were everywhere in the Old City, and for ages, I could not work out why.

Kid me cycled through theories. Maybe one dog had a massive litter and just abandoned them all there. Maybe it was a drop-off spot for unwanted dogs. Maybe that is why they were so angry, right? They were abandoned, bitter, and had nothing better to do but wait for someone to take it out on.

As I got older, I drifted toward the more boring explanation. The Old City owners wanted security, so they hired dogs. But that never fully held up either, because these dogs were stationed near the main gate, which had regular people wandering through like it was a completely normal public space.

So what was Mega Man specifically doing to earn that level of hatred?

Was he just off-putting? Did he smell weird?

The game never explains it, and honestly, that is fine. Some grudges do not need a reason.

Stranded on a Rooftop, Unsaved

I would hide on these rooftops for hours.

I have very specific memories of clambering onto a rooftop after getting absolutely dismantled by a pack of them. One health tick left. The kind of quiet desperation where you just stare at the screen for a moment, knowing you have to eventually come back down.

And I had not saved. Of course I had not saved. Why would I do that, right?

This happened to me so many times that I think it genuinely rewired something in my brain, because I became obsessive about saving after this. Every few minutes, save. Every new room, save. The Old City dogs scared me and totally conditioned me to become a saving fiend.

And while I was stuck up there on the roof, waiting for a plan to materialize, I would just sit and listen to the barking loop. These dogs had infinite stamina and absolutely nothing else going on, because they would bark forever. At some points, I started to feel impressed with how badly they wanted to do their job well, and their ability to not let their voices go hoarse.

The Kick, the Guilt, and the Paprika Question

Paprika from Mega Man Legends
Paprika is a good boy.

The kicking mechanic was its own whole thing. The first time I accidentally booted one mid-charge, I laughed so hard I dropped my controller. It just lowered its head and shuffled off with this completely defeated energy, a full-on "I have failed and I accept this" posture. It was genuinely funny for about three seconds, but then I started to feel bad. I have always had a strong love for animals, and I know this was just a game, but still. It felt wrong.

After that, I went out of my way to avoid kicking them, which was absolutely the harder and less efficient choice, but I had feelings about it.

What is interesting, though, is that in the American version of Mega Man Legends, you can kick every Old City dog, but you cannot kick Paprika earlier in the game when she chases Tron up the streetlight. Just Paprika is protected, and I think about that more than I probably should.

Was the localization team worried that kicking Paprika specifically would make Mega Man look cruel? Because he is already out here punting every other dog in the neighborhood like they owe him money.

Final Thoughts

The dogs from Mega Man Legends are, without question, one of my strongest memories of being a kid with a PS1.

They were relentless, confusing, a little tragic, and completely hilarious. Often all at once, and I never figured out if they were doing a job or just had nowhere else to be. And once again, I still ponder why the development team let you kick these dogs in all versions, but not Paprika.

What I do know is that they scared me in ways that outlasted the game, shaped how I thought about real dogs for an embarrassingly long time, and planted a saving habit that I still have not shaken.

Bonkers, wherever you are, I think you would find the whole thing very funny, and then begin wiggling in a weird way, gearing up to chase my feet.

If you grew up with Mega Man Legends, did the Old City dogs mess with you too, or was that just me?
