Best Retro Handheld Console in 2026 (PS1 Emulation with DuckStation)
Emulation forums are a special kind of chaos.
Someone asks what handheld gaming device to buy for Crash Bandicoot and ends up forty five minutes deep in a 2019 thread about Raspberry Pi cooling solutions. This guide exists to skip all of that.
Why DuckStation
DuckStation is the best PS1 emulator for retro handheld gaming in 2026 and it is not particularly close.
The alternatives are fine. PCSX-Rearmed is lightweight but you give up a lot of visual quality, and SwanStation inside RetroArch is solid but less flexible, and Beetle PSX HW is accurate in ways that matter and heavy in ways that hurt on Android.
DuckStation just does more. Very low input latency, strong Vulkan support, PGXP geometry correction which eliminates the polygon wobble that made PS1 games look like they were built out of nervous Jello, and active development from people who clearly still care about this.
Run Crash Bandicoot at 4x resolution with geometry correction on and the difference is immediate. It does not look like a remaster exactly. It just looks like the game you remembered, rather than the game that actually was.
Before Anything Else
DuckStation the emulator is completely legal to download and use.
PS1 BIOS files are not, and game ROM files are not, and the all in one packs that forums sometimes link to are a genuinely great way to also download something you did not ask for onto your device.
If you own a physical PS1 and physical game discs, you can dump your own BIOS and create backups of games you legally own. There are guides for this. This is not one of them, but that is the correct path.
The Best Retro Gaming Handheld for Most People
Best Retro Handheld by Budget (2026)
This does not run standalone DuckStation and uses RetroArch cores instead, which means no sharpening and no geometry correction, and games look the way they looked on the original hardware.
That is fine and that is actually the point for some people. If you want a cheap, extremely portable handheld gaming device to throw in a bag and play Crash Team Racing on your lunch break, this is a completely reasonable way to spend $55 and it is a good beater handheld that knows what it is.
Worth noting: the R36S is another popular budget retro handheld in this price range and is worth comparing if you are shopping around at the low end.
7 inch OLED and strong battery, and if screen size is the priority and you want something immersive for Resident Evil 2 or Metal Gear Solid or Silent Hill, this is the Android handheld gaming upgrade path.
If you want PS1, PS2, GameCube, PSP, and Switch all on one handheld gaming device with a community large enough that any problem you have has already been solved by someone else, this is the answer and EmuDeck handles most of the setup.
It is a lot of money to play Spyro. But it is not really just for Spyro.
Lighter than the previous Legion models and running SteamOS officially, and it is a legitimate Steam Deck alternative if the Steam Deck does not appeal to you for whatever reason.
Crash Bandicoot at 8x resolution on a massive OLED screen looks genuinely absurd in the best possible way, and you do not need this, but it exists and it is very powerful and I am not here to tell you what to do with your money.
Best DuckStation Settings for PS1 (2026)
For most PS1 games including Crash Bandicoot, Mega Man Legends, and Digimon Rumble Arena these settings work extremely well.
Internal Resolution: 4x Native
Texture Filtering: Nearest-Neighbor
Sprite Texture Filtering: Nearest-Neighbor
Dithering: True Color
Deinterlacing: Progressive (Optimal)
Aspect Ratio: Auto (Game Native)
Crop: Only Overscan Area
PGXP Geometry Correction: On
Widescreen Rendering: Off
DuckStation Rendering Tab — correct settings for handheld
Culling Correction: Off
Vertex Cache: Off
DuckStation PGXP Tab — leave everything off except Perspective Correct Textures
Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill sometimes glitch with PGXP enabled. If that happens simply disable PGXP for that specific game. DuckStation allows per game configuration.
Try Before You Buy
Download DuckStation from the Play Store on your current Android phone and load a legally backed up game you already own, and you will see immediately what upscaled PS1 looks like and whether it is something you want to chase.
It usually is.
